Graduation exercises for the New Orleans Brownfields Worker Training Program were held Saturday, February 23rd at Vincent’s City Café in Lake Forest Plaza-New Orleans East. Fifteen graduates received certificates of completion for Basic Skills training at DSCEJ and certification of technical training in General Construction, Hazardous Waste Worker, Lead and Asbestos Abatement, and Underground Storage Tank Removal.Their technical training was conducted by the Laborers-AGC in Livonia, LA and by a Laborers-AGC mobile unit from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The graduates were:

The graduates received recognition for their academic achievements. The top award for overall excellence went to Brian Grayson. Kennon Dright, Donald Trask, Jovan Lymuel, Omar Scott, and Terry Washington shared in the “big checks” for perfect attendance during basic skills and technical training. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences funded this program under a five-year cooperative agreement. This class was year two under that agreement. The next program is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2003.
The Industrial Canal Lock Job Training Program-Year 2 graduated sixteen trainees Saturday, June 8th. These exercises were also held at Vincent’s City Café. The graduates were trained through a grant from the US Army Corps of Engineers with the endorsement of the Community Based Mitigation Committee from the impact area surrounding the lock replacement project in the lower 9th ward, St. Claude, Bywater and the Holy Cross areas. Recruitment was done in the impact area with the assistance of three community residents who served as Community Outreach Assistants: Vivienne Blair, Richard Boseman, and Rev. Willie Smith.
The graduates received certificates for completing basic skills training at DSCEJ, and technical certifications in General Construction and Concrete Technology from the Carpenter’s Apprenticeship and Training Program, Hazardous Waste Worker training from Delgado Marine/Fire & Industrial Training Facility, and Lead and Asbestos Abatement training from Colorado Environmental Training Institute.
