Katrina 10 Climate Justice Convergence and COP21 Road to Paris Training

Forty seven (47) HBCU Climate Change Initiative delegates representing sixteen HBCU’s participated in the Katrina 10 Climate Justice Convergence and the COP21 Road to Paris Training, August 27-28, 2015 in New Orleans.

Some of the topics included, Equity and Justice Concerns in Gulf Coast Communities, the COP21 Process, Messaging and Social Media. Delegates participated in a World Climate Workshop engaging participants in role play as they discussed how nations negotiate a global agreement on climate change and how their decisions impact the global climate system. Presenters included Dr. Beverly Wright, Dillard University, Dr. Robert Bullard, Texas Southern University, Cecil Corbin-Mark, WeAct, Monique Harden, Advocates for Environmental Human Rights, Djuan Coleon, Project Urban Renewal Energy (PURE), Tina Johnson, formerly with Energy Action Coalition and Dr. Ebony Turner, Dillard University.

Delegates also participated in the Katrina 10 March and Second Line on Saturday, August 29, 2015. Participants gathered at the Lower Ninth Ward Levee Breach with a healing ceremony and reading of names of individuals who lost their lives during and after Katrina. The march continued through the streets of the Lower Ninth Ward and ended at Hunters Field with presenters and musician performances.
